O' Christmas Tree

I was having a discussion with Bob about which kind of tree is better for Christmas. A real one, or a fake.

We discussed how real trees smell great and are festive. But are more expensive since you have to purchase one each year, and the needles fall off when they die. But it's part of the fun of the season to go as a family and pick out just the right tree.

My family has always had a fake tree, so for me it's no big deal to get a real one. Bob's family used to always get real ones. But Bob doesn't really care either way. So as long as we have been married, we have stuck with our little fakey tree. Perhaps when we have children we will start the tradition of a real tree.

This got me thinking about if money were no object, and I could have any tree of my choosing. What would I choose? A large real tree, smelling of pine? A fake flocked tree all white like the one from my childhood? Nope, I would choose the small ceramic tree my Dad's mom made shown above.

It's the one tree that screams Christmas to me, brings back great memories, and is simply simple. Just my taste. Now, I just wonder how I could fit presents under it..

I'm interested in what everyone else needs in a tree. So..

What kind of tree is Christmas for you?

I remember a tree almost exactly like that from my childhood. Now I wonder what happened to it. Maybe if it is still in my mom's basement I can inherit it...

I absolutely adore the smell of a real tree. But I despise pine needles on my floor. So the fake tree always wins. We've had a real tree only twice since we were married and that was when we were too poor to afford a fake one. Someday though, I'd love to take the kids out into the woods to cut one down.

I always loved going to the tree lot (yeah, not a lot of pine trees growing wild in the Bay Area) and picking out a tree. I loved that some were lopsided and had some empty spots where I imagined animals had lived. And the smell... oh the SMELL! I loved it.

But now I'm far too practical for that. I would hate picking up the needles and remembering to water it, and ... I'm just far too OCD. So, fake tree it is. I love how predictable and easy it is. We searched for weeks for the one we have, and we love it!

When I was a young grasshopper we had a fake tree that shed more then any real tree I have ever seen. Then we switched to real and you can't beat the smell but the price is hard to justify for wat is basically a giant plant that only lasts one month. Now it's back to the fake kind. We'll see how long this one lasts.

My favorite tree from my childhood was flocked white and had all red lights. Grandmommy would tie a red and a green ball together and had red velvet bows. It was seriously the best on Christmas morning when the lights on the tree were the only lights illuminating all our gifts. I duplicated that tree for years until my kids couldn't stand the flocking anymore. I still love a beautiful tree and it is my very favorite Christmas decoration. I must admit I'm a bit of a tree snob.

My aunt and uncle in Idaho used to own a Christmas Tree farm... Yep, that is actually true.... So we always had a GORGEOUS and super FRESH real tree from their farm. Sometimes flocked, sometimes green....

Now we have the miniature Boston Celtics tree... Can't wait to move so I can have room for a real tree someday.
